The Fair Trade Towns USA movement began in July of 2006, and as of November 2016, there are 40 towns in the US that have achieved this designation with 76 in process. The first Fair Trade Towns USA designation was achieved by Media, Pennsylvania. The second largest in the world is Chicago. There are six Fair Trade Towns in California (San Francisco, Berkeley, Chico, Claremont, Healdsburg, San Ramon and La Mesa). There are a number of cities in California that have begun the process of becoming Fair Trade Towns: Los Angeles, Calistoga, Irvine, Long Beach, Murrieta, Pasadena, Pacific Grove and San Jose.
But what is the Fair Trade Towns USA movement?
The Fair Trade Towns USA movement is described as “an innovative grassroots campaign to raise awareness of Fair Trade and build demand for Fair Trade products, thereby providing increased benefits for farmers, workers and artisans in Latin America, Africa and Asia.”
